Frequently Asked Questions

What is Counselling?

While the words counselling and psychotherapy are often used interchangeably there are some key differences. Counselling generally refers to short term consultation and deals with issues in the here and now that are resolved on the conscious level. It is more concerned with practical and immediate problems such as anger, stress and anxiety, negative thoughts, work related issues and personal and professional decision making.

What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy refers to longer term treatment which extensively examines a person’s psychological history and is focussed on facilitating a person to understand his/her life in a reflective and self-compassionate manner. It goes much deeper to uncover root causes of problems that impact on the quality of one’s life and relationships aiming to empower the individual to free themselves from unconscious triggers and impulses through increased self-awareness.

What is expected of me?

Asking for help can sometimes be scary. It can feel like a very big step, and perhaps there is a sense of discomfort around admitting that we can’t cope on our own at this moment in time. Having taken this brave step, all that is expected is that you come with a willingness to engage with and explore the difficulties that you are facing.

Confidentiality is of primary concern to us. Any information given by you will be kept confidential by Mosaic Counselling and Psychotherapy. While the counsellor/psychotherapist may discuss aspects of their client work with their supervisor, your identity is not revealed. There are some exceptional circumstances, where we may have to break confidentiality such as where there is a risk of serious harm to yourself or others, especially a child. In these cases we have a statutory obligation to comply with the Children’s First Bill 2012 and Withholding Information on Offences against Children and Vulnerable Persons Act 2012. In these cases we will consult with you.

How much will it cost?

During your initial session with your counsellor/psychotherapist you will together agree on a weekly fee
